Why did you choose construction as a career?
I can’t say there was a specific calling – I just fell into it. I wasn’t sure if I would go on to do A-levels, so I was searching the Careers Room at courses that required only O-levels and came across Quantity Surveying. In the end, I did complete my A-levels, but QS stuck with me.
What are you most proud of in your career to date?
Rather than proud, I’d say what stands out as unique is that I’ve essentially had one job throughout my career. I progressed through the ranks at Cooper & Wood, eventually becoming a Partner. After 20 years, we merged with Pierce Hill, and two decades later, we merged again, this time with Stature. It’s been a journey of growth and evolution, and I’m proud to have played a role in shaping these transitions.
What has been the biggest challenge of your career to date?
Probably running a business. It’s been a process of learning on the go, and while it might not demand your full attention 24/7, you can never fully switch off. There’s always something lingering in the back of your mind.
If you could change one thing about the industry, what would it be?
The “them and us” approach between contractors and the client side team. Everyone is working for the same goal so why not do it harmoniously with everyone making a decent return? Whilst it’s a single aim, there are numerous issues to address before it can be achieved.
What is the most helpful advice that you have been given?
“Do what you say you are going to do and do it when you say you are going to do it”. Not easy at times, but it’s a great rule to live by.
Name your favourite building in the world?
St. Paul’s Cathedral. I walked past it every morning for nearly 10 years, and it’s impossible not to notice. It’s an iconic building, standing in stark contrast to the modern structures around it. What fascinates me most is how it survived the bombings of World War II—its resilience and grandeur never fail to amaze me.
What single piece of advice would you give to someone starting out in your profession?
Start building your network of contacts as early as you can. The relationships you establish will play a crucial role in your growth and opportunities throughout your career.
Who do you most admire most in the construction industry and why?
My peers. I find great satisfaction in hearing about their achievements and how they navigate challenges. Their resilience and problem-solving inspire me, and it’s motivating to see how we all learn and grow together in the industry.
What are your goals for SPH over the next few years?
To create a positive and rewarding working environment where everyone feels valued for their contributions. Ultimately, I want to build a business that, when I eventually step away, others are eager to be a part of and continue its success.
What do you consider your best quality and why?
Fairness. I always strive to see both sides of an issue and approach situations with balance and understanding. It helps me make thoughtful decisions and maintain strong relationships.
If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
Time travel. It would be incredibly useful, especially when it comes to solving all those hindsight issues. Being able to go back and learn from past decisions—or even glimpse into the future—would be a game-changer.
Most famous person in your phone book?
Too many NDA’s in place to reveal that!
What song on your iPhone is your guilty pleasure?
I could try to deny it, but a little too much honesty at a Christmas lunch already gave me away. So here it is: S Club 7’s Reach!
If we had a work talent show, what would your talent be?
Judge!
Which actor would play you in a movie about your life?
I’ve been told more than once that Daniel Craig is my double and now he’s done with Bond there’s no excuse.
